Algebra 1 Honors is an advanced course which provides the foundation for more advanced mathematics courses and sciences. Topics include, but are not limited to, sets, variables, structure and properties of the real number system, first-degree equations and inequalities, relations, functions, graphs, systems of linear equations/inequalities, integral exponents, polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, irrational numbers, radical expressions, quadratic equations, and mathematical problem solving.Honors level classes can expect more rigorous requirements for assignments and assessments.

Prerequisite: 'A' in Pre-Algebra

This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

6 weeks course

For full 1.00 credit the student MUST complete both 'A' sessions (6-weeks)

Meet Zachary Carfagno+

Zachary Carfagno has been teaching math at American Heritage School for ten years. He is a Co-chair of the Math Department and one of the coaches of our nationally recognized Math Competition Team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and has lived in South Florida for 25 years.

Meet Michelle Okum+

A twenty-one year veteran teacher, Ms. Okun has been teaching at American Heritage Schools for 11 years. During her time at American Heritage Schools, Ms. Okun has taught different math courses from Pre-Algebra through Analysis of Functions. Ms. Okun holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, a Master's degree in Educational Leadership, and is also ESE endorsed. Ms. Okun's teaching philosophy is, "all students can achieve." She reaches this goal by utilizing various teaching strategies to address all students' learning styles.

Jennifer Simplice+

Mrs. Simplice received her Masters in Business from Nova Southeastern University and holds her Florida’s Educator Certification in Mathematics Grades 5-9. After working 13 years in the corporate world, she decided to pursue her passion in teaching. Mrs. Simplice started teaching in a Title I school working with a diverse student group, where she led multiple initiatives to enhance student growth and improve learning gains. Mrs. Simplice is new to the Heritage family and currently teaches Pre-Algebra and Algebra. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. She looks forward to partnering with all students to help them reach their maximum potential.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times. Requirements for AHS Students; Students must currently be in 7th grade or higher and recommended for Algebra 1 Honors and earned at least an A- for the 1st semester.
