Course Description+

Chemistry Honors is an advanced course and in-depth study of the established principles of chemistry. Students will discover relationships between the structure and properties of matter and will use the knowledge to produce new materials. The course will cover topics such as atomic structure, periodic table, bonding, chemical names and formulas, mole relationships, balancing and predicting reactions, stoichiometry, behavior of gases, solutions, reaction rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox reactions. This class is very math intensive. This course is required for students who are planning to complete the Honors Medical Professions Program.

Honors level classes can expect more rigorous requirements for assignments and assessments.

Prerequisite: 'B' in previous honors level science classes, completion of Honors Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 Advanced.

This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Session 2A: 7/01/24 - 7/19/24 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - Closed 7/04/24
Session 3A: 7/22/24 - 8/09/24 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit

6 weeks course

For full 1.00 credit the student MUST complete both 'A' sessions (6-weeks)
For 0.50 credit or audit the student may take first session only '2A' (first 3 weeks)

Meet Ms. Paula Urrea+

Ms. Paula Urrea, AP Chemistry Teacher on our Broward Campus will be teaching the course. Ms. Urrea graduated with a degree in Neuroscience from Amherst College. She has taught Honors and AP Chemistry at American Heritage since 2019.

Meet Ms. Kimberly Smith+

Ms. Kimberly Smith earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology at Florida State University. She is a high school honors science teacher at AHS. Ms. Smith has taught a variety of science courses over her 15 year teaching career, including chemistry, biology, environmental science, and marine biology. Her teaching style focuses on hands-on experimentation, class discussions, and group collaboration.

Additional Course Information+

This course requires coming to campus 1 or more day per week for lab work. A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
