Course Description+

This course teaches the skills students need to become 21st century leaders. Students are encouraged to explore and achieve personal growth, and each student will participate in service opportunities. Goal-setting and team building are emphasized as students create proposals to implement projects. Students will earn 30 community service hours.

This 3-week semester course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Meet Shaneka Major+

Shaneka Major is an experienced teacher with a Bachelor's degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. She holds a Master of Science degree in Exceptional Student Education. Within her fifteen years of being an educator, she has held the following positions: Classroom Instructor, ESE Specialist, ESE Facilitator, and Grade Level Assistant Principal. Currently, she teaches Composition and Grammar Honors as well as Junior High Journalism, and she is the advisor to The Writer's Circle club.

Meet Lara Herrera+

Lara Herrera is a 17-year veteran educator. She has been a member of the American Heritage School faculty for three years, teaching Psychology, Sociology, and other social studies courses. Previously, she taught AP Psychology in Broward Schools, served as the Lead AP Psychology Teacher for the Local Advanced Placement Credentialing Program, and sponsored the Psychology Club (with a competition team). She has also been the recipient of grants from both the College Board and the American Psychological Association for training and travel with students. Lara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and is currently a graduate student in Nova Southeastern University's General Psychology program and a Teacher Affiliate of the American Psychological Association, as well as a Master of Science in Psychology from Nova Southeastern University.

Meet Valerie Edris+

Mrs. Edris, an upper school math teacher at American Heritage Schools, has over 18 years of teaching experience. This year she was also involved with the math competition team. She has her Bachelor of Science in Education from Florida State University and earned her Masters degree in Educational Technology from Florida Atlantic University. Mrs. Edris has experience teaching a wide variety of subjects and different grade levels. This experience has given her the ability to use different styles of teaching and instill the love of learning across all ages or subjects.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
