Course Description+

Biology is the study of the living world. In this course, students will be introduced to the full diversity of living organisms that inhabit all terrestrial and aquatic realms on Earth. Students will also be introduced to the basic structures and functions of the plant and animal groups. Genetics and cell structures/relationship are also major areas of study.

This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Session dates:
Session 1A: 6/10/24 - 6/28/24 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit
Session 2A: 7/01/24 - 7/19/24 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - Closed 7/04/24

6 weeks course

For full 1.00 credit the student MUST complete both 'A' or 'B' sessions (6-weeks)
For 0.50 credit or audit the student may take first session only '1A' or '1B' (first 3 weeks)

Meet Tennille Kantner-Brill+

Tennille Kantner-Brill is a 21-year veteran teacher. She taught and was the Science Department Chair at Pembroke Pines Charter Junior High for 16 years. Five years ago, she decided to make the move to American Heritage School. She holds a Master's in Educational Leadership.

Meet Jennifer Fermin+

American Heritage teacher Jennifer Fermin currently teaches Honors Biology and Honors Environmental Health. She also coaches the upper school Science Olympiad competition team and advises the newly formed Florida Wildlife Conservation Club. Born and raised in Liberia, West Africa, she grew up surrounded by many creatures at her family's animal orphanage. A leopard, a hippo, chimps, monkeys and deer, to name a few, shared her home. Because of this amazing experience, she has always been passionate about wildlife. She has a Bachelor in Environmental Studies and Biology, and a Master in Conservation Biology. Before becoming a teacher she worked many years as a primatologist for such great organizations as Conservation International, the IUCN and the DuMond Conservancy for Primates and Tropical Forests. Jennifer loves to teach. She hopes to inspire and empower students to explore the science of life!

Meet Dr. Roy McGriff+

Dr. Roy McGriff has been an educator for 17 years. Currently, he teaches Biology and Environmental Science. Throughout his teaching career, he has taught science in elementary school, junior high, high school, and internationally in the United Arab Emirates. Dr. McGriff's goal is to teach and inspire students to reach their full potential in education and to develop their interest in the study of the sciences.

Meet Suzanne Williamson+

Suzanne Williamson has a background in Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, and Human Evolution. She holds a Masters of Arts in Forensic Anthropology and has a graduate research background in ecology and human biology. Mrs. Williamson has been teaching at the high school level for 10 years and has taught introductory courses at NYU for 4 years prior to that. In 2017, she was a Dwyer Award finalist. Suzanne has been a Green School Coordinator, and she is currently the Green Team Sponsor at AHS as well as the Junior High Science Research Teacher in addition to teaching her high school science courses. Suzanne has taught all levels of Environmental Science and Environmental Health as well as multiple levels of Biology.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
