Course Description+

This introductory course to Visual Concepts introduces students to the processes, tools, principles, and elements of design for various art forms. The curriculum incorporates art history from pre-historic times to current day art and integrates aesthetics with art production.

This 3-week semester course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Session 2A: 7/01/24 - 7/19/24 (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - Closed 7/04/24
Session 2B: 7/01/24 - 7/19/24 (12:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - Closed 7/04/24

3 weeks course

For 0.50 credit or audit the student should only take one session in one specified 3-week time period

Meet Izel Vargas+

Izel Vargas is a dynamic professional mixed media artist with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Texas - Pan American (now University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley) and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He has worked for various art centers and taught at the college level for over 12 years while maintaining an active studio practice and exhibition record. He has been a member of the American Heritage School Fine Arts Department for three years.

Meet Shannon Wade+

Shannon Wade has taught art classes at American Heritage School for 15 years. Of those 15, 12 summers were spent teaching Visual Concepts at American Heritage Summer Institute. Shannon developed the Visual Concepts curriculum which has been taught for the past 13 years. She has a BFA in Art and a K-12 Art teaching degree. She also has an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Miami. Shannon has taught grades 6-12 and also has experience teaching Art Appreciation/ History at the college level.

Meet Janine Knight+

Janine Knight is a graduate of Florida State University with a degree in Interior Design. Her experience with space planning, project management, and AutoCAD led to her working for several corporations such as Popeye’s and Sports Authority. She has drafted, designed, and managed construction projects such as restaurants, office buildings, retail spaces, and homes. Mrs. Knight began teaching Architecture and Design at the college level in 2004. She still teaches courses such as History of Architecture; Building Codes, Materials, and Estimation; and Professional Practices at Palm Beach State College. She began teaching Architectural Drafting and Computer Graphics at American Heritage in 2018.

Meet Stephanie Warren+

This summer we welcome Stephanie Warren to our year round family! Mrs. Warren was born and raised in the Bahamas and moved to Florida in 2007. She is an Honors graduate of the former Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale with a Bachelors in Interior Design. She acquired her real estate license shortly after graduation and spent four years working on yacht interiors while traveling and provisioning mega yachts around the world. Because of her passion for learning, she went back to school to become a certified teacher and has been teaching art since 2016. She taught both ESE and EBD students K- Age 22 for four years at a specialized school in Miramar, Fl, before transitioning to teaching junior high visual arts online for FLVS for the last two years.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
