Course Description+

Biology Honors is an advanced class and an in-depth study of the basic concepts of Biology in a content based laboratory approach. Building proficiency in critical and creative thinking and problem solving is a major thrust of the entire program. Problems that require students to reach beyond the content and apply biological understanding of universal concern will be incorporated into the course. Students must be motivated, organized, and able to balance rigorous coursework with other activities and classes.

Honors level classes can expect more rigorous requirements for assignments and assessments.

Prerequisite: 'A' in previous honors level science classes.

This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

6 weeks course

For full 1.00 credit the student MUST complete both 'A' sessions (6-weeks)
For 0.50 credit or audit the student may take first session only '1A' (first 3 weeks)

Meet Nery Valderrama+

Mrs. Valderrama received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Nova Southeastern University. Mrs. Valderrama has taught a variety of life science courses for the past 10 years, including Biology Honors, AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology Honors, and IB Biology. Her teaching style focuses on hands-on experimentation, class discussions, and group collaboration.

Meet Dr. Diana Sood+

Diana Sood is an advisor, mentor and a teacher at American Heritage School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Florida International University and her Medical Doctorate degree at Universidad Iberoamericano in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She has worked with an orthopedic surgeon as a surgery coordinator/educator/ researcher. Her job involved helping patients prepare for surgery, post surgery, and postoperative procedures. Her responsibilities also included research with a well-known orthopedic knee and hip replacement surgeon with research papers soon to be published. She has worked at American Heritage for the past 5 years, teaching pre-medical classes and Biology Honors classes. During the summer, she serves as a research mentor for the Summer Science Institute and helps students advance in their research skills. Dr. Sood takes great joy teaching and helping students advance their knowledge in the medical and science fields. She is also proud to be an advisor for HOSA, a student organization for future health professionals, at American Heritage.

Meet Edwin Maegher+

Mr. Edwin Maegher is a high school honors science teacher who earned both his Masters in Biology and Masters in Education at Florida Atlantic University. Mr. Maegher has taught a variety of science courses over his 10 year teaching career, including chemistry, biology, and anatomy. His teaching style focuses on hands-on experimentation, class discussions, and group collaboration.

Additional Course Information+

This course requires coming to campus 1 or more day per week for lab work. A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
