English 1 Second Semester

English 1 students will focus on reading, discussion, and writing strategies they will use throughout their high school. Students will be exposed to a variety of texts exploring different voices, techniques, perspectives, genres, and time periods. Students will study vocabulary, grammar, and composition to learn how to construct a variety of written and oral pieces. The required research paper and speech assignments provide practice in research methods and documentation, MLA compliance, self-expression, and organization skills.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of previous grade level English

This 6-week course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

For full 1.00 credit the student MUST complete both 'A' sessions (6-weeks)
For 0.50 credit or audit the student may take first session only '2A' (first 3 weeks)

Juan C. Laureano is an English Teacher at American Heritage School.Mr. Laureano holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University and is a member of the Florida Bar. Juan is certified in English (6-12), with an additional certification in Exceptional Student Education; he double majored in English Literature and English Education and holds a Bachelor's from Florida State University. Juan has been in education and part of the American Heritage Family for 7 years. He is also a Senior Advisor and Student Government Advisor helping students build a forum for student interests and promoting student leadership opportunities.

Mr. Ewart has been teaching English since 1999 when he went to South Korea to teach ESL. James has a BA in Psychology (Human Development) from DePaul University and a MA in English Literature from SJSU. From 2005 until 2016, Mr. EwartI taught College Academic Writing at Broward College, MDC, and Nova Southeastern University.

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
